Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is intended to assist women in overcoming the discomfort and self-consciousness associated with large or uneven labia minora (inner labia). By reducing and reshaping the labia, this procedure can address issues related to comfort, size, shape, or asymmetry, allowing you to fully embrace life with confidence.
What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size of the labia minora (aka vaginal lips) and improve its shape and symmetry. The procedure can significantly improve your daily comfort, enhance sexual wellbeing, refine aesthetics, and boost your self-confidence by addressing concerns related to the appearance and function of the labia minora.
The Procedure
STEP 1: Anesthesia
The procedure is most often done under local anesthetic only, however, other options are available to maximize your comfort if unable to tolerate a surgical procedure awake and alert. A topical anesthetic is applied to the area in advance which significantly minimizes the discomfort of injection. Almost all patients are able to have the procedure done without any additional medications.
Step 2: The Incision
During labiaplasty, excess tissue is carefully removed and reshaped to create a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance of the labia minora. The procedure is performed using either a Trim technique, a V-Wedge method, or a modified V-Wedge excision. Dr. Abedi will choose the procedure with you based on your anatomy and desired goals. For example, if hyperpigmentation is the main issue for you, then trim technique will best meet your needs.

STEP 3: Closing the Incisions
All incisions are closed with absorbable sutures.
STEP 4: See the Results
Although the improved contours of the labia minora are immediately visible following the procedure, the swelling in the area can be significant enough to obscure the results in the first week after the surgery. It can take 2-3 weeks for the swelling to subside and the improved contour and shape to become fully apparent. As healing progresses, the final results will become clearer, showcasing a more refined and symmetrical appearance.
risks and safety
As with any surgical procedure, labiaplasty carries potential risks and complications. The decision to proceed with this surgery is extremely personal and you will have to decide if the benefits, risks, and potential complications are acceptable. Prior to your surgery, you will be asked to sign a consent form to ensure that you fully understand the procedure.
The risks include:
Bleeding or hematoma that may require a small procedure
Infection
Poor wound healing - incisions opening
Unsightly scarring
Damage to deeper structures such as nerves
Numbness or other changes in skin sensation
Pain, which may persist
Pain with intercourse
Vaginal dryness with aggressive excisions
Sutures may not absorb, but spontaneously surface through the skin, causing irritation, drainage and redness
Asymmetry
Contour deformity
Possible need for revisional surgery
These risks and others will be fully discussed prior to your consent. It's important that you address all your questions directly with Dr. Abedi.
RECOVERY AFTER SURGERY
Following your procedure, a simple gauze dressing is applied with an ice pack to minimize swelling.
Dr. Abedi will give you specific instructions on how to care for the surgical sites and keep them clean. You will be given a prescription for pain medications and antibiotics as well as detailed post operative instructions and follow up appointments.
You will be advised to avoid wearing tight underwear or clothing, to elevate your legs in the first few days, and avoid prolonged (hours) standing for the first week. You can likely return back to work after a week or less depending on your profession. You should avoid strenuous activities for the first 2 weeks and intercourse for 4-6 weeks.
Be sure to follow Dr. Abedi’s post-operative instructions for a smooth recovery.
