cOSMETIC PROCEDURES > BREAST > Nipple Surgery

Nipple size, shape, and projection can be a source of concern or discomfort for many. Fortunately, minor procedures under local anesthetic can address a lot of these issues, allowing you to feel more confident.

What is Inverted Nipple Correction?

Nipples come in a variety of shapes and sizes. It is very common to feel self-conscious about the shape of your nipple. Many people have nipples that are inverted. These nipples may become everted with stimulation, with breastfeeding, or with more invasive interventions such as nipple piercing. Surgical correction of inverted nipples is another method to help permanently evert the nipples. It is often done under local anesthetic through a small incision at the base of the nipple. The procedure takes less than an hour and does not require general anesthetic.

risks and safety

The decision to have inverted nipples corrected is extremely personal, and you'll have to decide if the benefits will achieve your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable. You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure and any risks and potential complications.

The risks include:

  • Reactions to tape, suture materials, glues, topical preparations, or injected agents

  • Bleeding

  • Asymmetry

  • Changes in nipple sensation, may be temporary or permanent

  • Damage to deeper structures - such as nerves and milk ducts

  • Infection

  • Inability to breastfeed in the future

  • Partial or complete loss of nipple viability

  • Recurrence of inversion

What is Nipple Reduction?

Nipples come in a variety of shapes and sizes. It is very common to feel self-conscious about the size of your nipple. Many people have nipples that are large and sometimes visible through clothing. This can fortunately be treated very easily under local anesthetic. The exact type of procedure depends on the dimensions of the nipple. For very prominent tall nipples, the base of the nipple is debulked circumferentially leading to a scar at the base of the nipple. This will shorten the length of the nipple. For wider nipples, a wedge of tissue is removed to help make the nipple appear narrower. This will result in a single scar within the nipple. The procedure takes less than an hour and does not require general anesthetic.

risks and safety

The decision to have large nipples corrected is extremely personal, and you'll have to decide if the benefits will achieve your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable. You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure and any risks and potential complications.

RECOVERY AFTER SURGERY

After the procedure, you can likely drive yourself home, however we always recommend having someone accompany you. You will be able to go back to work the next day. You may need to wear loose clothing to minimize pressure on the dressings. You can resume full activities in 1-2 weeks if Dr. Abedi is satisfied with your healing at your post operative visit.
